How Long Do Dryers Last? Repair or Replace

Typical lifespan, what wears a dryer out early, and a simple way to make the repair-or-replace call.

How Long Do Dryers Last? Repair or Replace

A clothes dryer usually lasts somewhere between 8 and 13 years. Fixr puts the typical lifespan at 8 to 12 years, and Angi puts it at 10 to 13. Where yours lands depends mostly on how often you run it and how well its airflow is maintained.

Age alone doesn't mean a dryer needs replacing. Many common failures, like a worn belt or a blown thermal fuse, are cheap fixes on an otherwise solid machine. The smart call weighs the dryer's age, the repair price and how often it's been breaking.

Because washers and dryers are often bought as a pair, it's worth knowing the washer tends to last about as long. If both are nearing the end, a washer and dryer repair company can look at both machines in one visit.

What shortens a dryer's life

Poor airflow

Airflow is the big one. A dryer pushes hot, damp air out through the lint screen and vent. When that path clogs, the dryer runs longer and hotter on every load. That extra heat wears out heating parts and trips safety devices like the thermal fuse.

Whirlpool says a dirty lint screen or crushed vent restricts airflow and stresses the heating system. Maytag recommends cleaning the house vent every one to two years, or sooner if drying slows down, and LG recommends professional vent cleaning once a year. Our guide to a clogged dryer vent covers the warning signs.

Overloading and very wet loads

Whirlpool advises filling the drum only about three-quarters full so clothes can tumble. It also recommends spinning soaking-wet items in the washer before drying them. Heavy, wet loads strain the belt, rollers, bearings and motor. They also stretch out run times, which adds hours of wear over the years.

Skipped lint cleaning

ENERGY STAR and the U.S. Fire Administration both say to clean the lint filter after every load. USFA also says to never run a dryer without its lint filter in place. If you use dryer sheets, ENERGY STAR suggests scrubbing the filter monthly to remove the film they leave behind.

Signs your dryer is wearing out

  • Loads take noticeably longer to dry even with a clean screen and clear vent. See our guide to a dryer not drying.
  • It runs but stops heating. Our dryer not heating guide covers the causes.
  • New squealing, thumping or grinding from the drum, which usually points to belt, roller or bearing wear.
  • The same part, like the thermal fuse, keeps failing.
  • You've paid for more than one repair in a short span.

One sign is never about age. If you smell burning or see scorching, stop using the dryer and unplug it. If it's a gas dryer and you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. Our guide on what to do when a dryer smells like burning explains next steps.

Repair or replace: a simple way to decide

Consumer cost guides offer a few rules of thumb that work well together.

  1. The 50 percent rule. Angi suggests that if a repair would cost more than about half the price of a new dryer, replacing is usually the better choice.
  2. The age rule. Fixr suggests replacing once a dryer is around 10 years old or past half its expected life.
  3. The repeat-repair rule. Angi notes a dryer that keeps needing repairs despite regular maintenance is usually cheaper to replace.

Put real numbers to it. Fixr lists a new dryer at roughly $600 to $1,500, and Angi says most dryer repairs run about $100 to $430. A belt or thermal fuse job on a five-year-old dryer is an easy repair. A $400 motor on a 12-year-old dryer that's already had two service calls probably isn't. Our dryer repair cost guide lists typical prices by part.

Get a diagnosis before you decide

Don't replace a dryer on a guess. A no-heat problem might be a tripped breaker or a closed gas valve. A dryer that seems worn out might just have a clogged vent. Whirlpool and Maytag both suggest simple checks, like confirming a heated cycle is selected and that both breakers on an electric dryer's 30-amp circuit are on. A technician's diagnosis tells you exactly what failed and what it costs, which is what the rules above need.

Gas models need a technician who works on gas appliances. Look for one under gas dryer repair.

Habits that help a dryer last longer

  • Clean the lint screen before or after every load, and never run the dryer without it.
  • Give the screen a deeper wash every few months. Whirlpool suggests a nylon brush, hot water and liquid detergent, then letting it dry fully.
  • Have the vent cleaned on the schedule your manufacturer recommends, and sooner if drying slows down.
  • Keep the duct behind the dryer straight and uncrushed, and make sure the outdoor flap opens freely.
  • Don't overload the drum, and spin very wet items in the washer first.
  • Call for service when a new noise starts. A worn roller or belt is cheaper to fix before it damages other parts.

If you do replace it

A new dryer is a chance to cut running costs. ENERGY STAR says certified dryers use sensors to stop the cycle when clothes are dry, which saves energy and reduces over-drying. It also says heat pump dryers can cut energy use by at least 28 percent compared with standard dryers. They don't need an outside vent, though the water they collect has to be drained or emptied.

Whatever you buy, give it good airflow from day one. USFA recommends having a professional install and service the dryer and checking that the outdoor vent flap opens while it runs.
